Top 10 Features to Look for in a Treadmill

Sometimes there are days where getting outside for a walk just isn’t going to happen. Whether it’s due to the weather, a sleeping or uncooperative child, the lack of daylight, or any number of other reasons, finding an alternative to get in those intentional walks is sometimes necessary. It’s on those days where you might turn to the convenience of a treadmill, but what if you’re looking to purchase a treadmill and you have no idea where to start? Well, we surveyed the 99 Walks Pack and compiled a list of favorite brands and must-have features to keep in mind as you start your search.

To start, treadmills come in all price ranges. Though there are some under $250, you’ll find that the functionality will be bare bones. There are many good options between $500 - $1000 and beyond, so unless you can find a second-hand machine, consider your treadmill purchase an investment and think through what features are most important to you. To help you break it down, following are the top 10 must have features:

  1. Incline Levels: You’ll want to have the opportunity to mirror the variable elevation change you get when walking outdoors as well as challenge yourself, so having the ability to alter your incline is key.

  2. Variable Speeds: The ability to adjust your speed in increments of ½ mile per hour allows you to tailor your experience to your preferences. Look for a treadmill that allows you to increase the speed from 0 - 12 miles per hour to give you the most flexibility.

  3. Bluetooth Capability: With all of the walking classes offered on the 99 Walks app (and inspirational podcasts, too), having Bluetooth technology helps connect you to all of the audio you need to make your walk both entertaining and effective.

  4. Footprint Size: You’ll want to take into account the amount of space you have in your home and consider the footprint of your treadmill. A foldable deck really helps to free up space when your machine is not in use.

  5. Longer Walking Surface: All strides are different, so make sure the walking surface on the treadmill you are considering is long enough. Consider both the length and width of the treadmill deck to make sure it’s right for all those that might use it.

  6. Accessories Holder/Console: Staying hydrated while you walk and having your phone close at hand are important, so make sure you have a cup holder and place to set your phone, tablet or other essentials while you’re getting in your miles.

  7. Quiet is Key: Since you’ll likely be listening to audio while you walk, and may not want to disturb others in your household, having a quiet belt and motor helps keep the noise down and your focus on your walk.

  8. Easy on the Feet: To keep your feet and joints comfortable, look for a treadmill with shock-absorbing and cushioning features to take the stress off your body and leave you feeling good both during and after your workout.

  9. Pre-Set Program Options: Changing up your routine is great to help you progress in your fitness goals, so finding a treadmill that offers a variety of pre-set programs can keep your walk variables, like intervals, consistent, and provides you with options for different challenges.

  10. Heart Rate Monitor: One of the best ways to track your effort and progress is by watching your heart rate, so a heart rate monitor could be a useful tool. You’ll be able to watch your heart rate rise when you push yourself and decrease as your body recovers.

There were three brands we saw repeated frequently as favorites among the pack members that participated in our survey. First was ProForm which falls in the $750 - $1000 price range, followed by NordicTrack which has the highest price point of over $1000, and the third favorite was Sole coming in closer to the $500 - $750 price range.

As you research the best treadmill for your budget, space, and desired features, take the time to read reviews to get first-hand experience before you buy. Most treadmills have weight limits, so be sure that the treadmill you are considering will be right not just for you, but also for any family members who might also use it. If you’re able to try it out before you buy, even better! And once you have that treadmill in place, there’s no better way to break in your new piece of sports equipment than with one of our awesome 99 Walks treadmill classes found right in your walking app!
